The commonest of ant that invades work places/houses is the black garden ant.  3 - 5mm in length the foraging worker ants can be found as far as 10 - 20m from their nests, foraging for food and are attracted to sweet food to take back to their nests to feed the queen and larvae.
During summer, winged females (Queens) and males leave the nest on one or two warm afternoons and take flight.  During this flight they mate.  The female then finds a nest site where she stays for the winter and starts a new colony up in the following spring.
